Glory boys is Coast guard name . What happens when CG get damaged or sunk and there is no other form available for rescue other than private boats and a ticketed skipper available to take the helm . The ticketed skipper is not allowed to take an unsurveyed boat out . He has to watch them die from Hyperthermia or drown all because Coast Guard are Glory boys . Check this out.

Arse been a skipper for the last 60 years .I have crossed this bar many times .it can sense fear like a dog.i always put my arm bands and speedos on when fishing.

This video was uploaded 12 years ago, has had 5,135 "views" which were probably people checking to see what the weather was going to be ( the reason I clicked on it ) and it has had 5 "likes", probably by the people that made it. I have clicked "dislike" because it is an outdated advertisement by people that clearly think nobody knows that weather reports are available at all the places mentioned in this advertisement, and have been available at these places, for years, and years, and years. What SHOULD BE PROMOTED is the apps available that people can get FOR THEIR CELLPHONES, AND THE REWARDS AVAILABLE for them using them. ( fishing gear, radios, giveaways etc with winners selected at random from logins ) Years ago I rung the NZ Met Service and suggested that they establish an 0900 service for boaties, who would press a number to get an updated report for their local area. 6 months later they did. Maybe this time they will update that with the vastly improved technological advancements in services now available, worldwide. WINDFINDER is just 1 example that SAFER BOATING should be promoting, and not the dinosaurs of the past. One wonders if anyone at Maritime NZ or other TAXPAYER FUNDED GOVERNMENT DEPARTMENTS actually realise that only larger boats and yachts have VHF, Radio Stations weather forecasts come from overseas suppliers, newspapers are not printed anymore, and the MetPhone "service" is even more pathetic than this 15 year old advertisement. Which, after all the time this advertisement has been sitting up there on the net, I am the 1st and only person to make a comment. And I have NEVER MET ANYONE, in 65 years of boating and yachting, NEVER MET ANYONE WHO HAS NOT CHECKED THE WEATHER. It is the CHANGING CONDITIONS AFTER LEAVING PORT that people need to be educated on, not treated like dummies, by dummies.

That was BRILLIANT, scary but BRILLIANT. Scary is a good thing it make you think deeper, I doubt I will be crossing a bar but at least I know what a bar is. At 63 I always thought a bar was the opening to the sea from a river or estuary. When I was 18 the ferry's in Liverpool at night when Mersey crossings where close are used as night clubs ( dont do that now, this was in the mid 70's) so I used to go there obviously to click with young girls, so the ferries went to the bar and turned around this would take 6 hours 3 each way. That was so informative ive saved it to my laptop. Not buying a boat as such but I want a Honwave T32 IE with a 15hp four stroke engine. Its only for me hence why its only 3.2 mtres I have not bought it yet but will practice on lakes and rives before going out into the sea. I have lots of videos of learing tides but SAND BAR ? Thank you so much for helping me under stand what those are and now I can really understand how DANGEROUS on a windy day that would be and possibly even more dangerous with a cross wind. Thought with the most dangerous inlets in the world it is the bottom topography along with the current wind and waves now with this suggestion it may be government doesn't want to come off the pocketbook but my thought is what would happen if you used the equivalent of a river lock and went upriver and cut a bypass Channel exhausting the current from the river to the Sea and do not let boats use that channel instead there would be a lock gate of the inland side of the jetty in the river Channel run the Jetties far enough out to where you can hit, Kamar water and put a lock gate there so that there is no River current and waves between the gates and the Jetties and of course the two sets of Gate at either end cannot ever be open at the same time so other words the river and its current and the rough Seas that it causes it goes one way and the ships the boats they go the other way through the locks to the Sea

Excellent info and filming. In South Africa, on our wild coast we do not have the luxury of NSRI stations/info. It is all done from experience. Most old timers did this on one man paddle skis. Thanks guys.

A great video. It advises to always have a pair of oars or an auxiliary motor. I think this is OK if you have main motor trouble in a calm Lake or River, as it will get you home. I'd suggest that for bar crossings you need your main motor, and if its not working please don't try and cross on an auxiliary motor.

I was watching the Miami channel on here to watch fools on boats going out and stuffing their bows. I figured it was time for me to gain some actual useful knowledge about crossing bars.

I don't want to disrespectful but, l have the same life jacket that you are wearing, l have done some tests on it from my PwC. Mine 9 times out of ten it will not flip me onto my back from a face plant entry to the sea. It will in time, but definitely not fast enough, and needs assistance from waves to do it at any speed, and sometimes never. Thats more than 40% of the time from that angle. So l brought a good inflatable and tested that in the same way. Without a lie, it flips me back within 3 seconds every time no matter what the water is doing or the angle of entry. It never failed, l used 15 canisters in testing from still water to a rough sea. It has much more floatation, Plus it has a water storm hood and a harness, a cheap phone in a plastic bag, a location device, a whistle and a waterproof torch all in it. Apart from it being slightly heavy, l don't know l have it on. I don't think I would use the old one again, because l think it's fairly rudimentary, and may or may not save you, if you are unconscious of coarse. Matinance may have to be done, but that should just go along with the boat. I have no problems with it. I would like to know your opinion, and by all means please do your own testing. Or there are plenty of utube accounts you may look at. Thanks for the video, great advice. I did not know about slipping down the coast a little from Raglan. Thanks again 😊

Also remember a general rule is that a 1 foot wave will break in 3 feet of water 2 - 6, 3 - 9 et cetera so you know the depth of water
